Axiom is a commercial real estate valuation firm based in Birmingham, Alabama, serving clients across Central and North Alabama and beyond. We provide commercial real estate appraisals, litigation and advisory support, lender and transactional valuations, and market and feasibility studies for a wide range of property types and use cases.

The Tradition of Valuation

The work of property valuation predates modern real estate markets by thousands of years.

Early legal systems in ancient Babylon recorded land, crops, and buildings for taxation, inheritance, and commerce, establishing a principle that still holds today: value must be documented, consistent, and defensible.

Greek and Roman systems extended this foundation, introducing structured reasoning, formal land records, and market-based assessments across increasingly complex economies. Over time, this practical craft evolved into a defined professional discipline, supported by modern standards and institutions.

Derek Munro

Founder, Principal Appraiser

Axiom is led by Derek Munro, a Certified General Real Property Appraiser with experience across a broad range of commercial asset types, including multifamily, retail, office, industrial, hospitality, special-use properties, and land.

Derek’s work is grounded in a longstanding connection to the Birmingham real estate market. Through family ties to a multigenerational appraisal presence in the region, he developed an early understanding of local market dynamics, valuation principles, and the level of rigor expected by lenders, attorneys, and investors across Central Alabama. That foundation continues to inform his approach to each assignment.

His work focuses on producing clear, defensible valuations supported by detailed market analysis and property-level research. He is regularly engaged for complex or transitional assets, litigation support, and assignments requiring deeper feasibility or market context.

Derek’s professional background includes a decade in Washington, D.C., within the legal department of a Fortune 50 healthcare payer, along with early work at the Library of Congress and formal study in political science and economics at the University of New Hampshire. The throughline is analytical discipline, applied today to valuation work where legal, financial, and market considerations intersect.

He adheres to recognized professional standards and continuing education practices, including those advanced by the Appraisal Institute. His work is defined by accuracy, objectivity, and a clear understanding of how valuation supports real-world financial and legal decision-making.

Lisa Munro

Co-Founder, Chief of Strategy & Marketing

Lisa Munro leads strategy and marketing for Axiom, with a focus on positioning, growth, and client engagement across the firm’s valuation services.

Her work centers on translating complex technical services into clear, decision-oriented communication for lenders, attorneys, investors, and business leaders. She brings a structured, analytical approach to messaging and market strategy, ensuring the firm’s work is presented with the same clarity and rigor as the valuations themselves.

Lisa’s background spans over a decade across government, consulting, and healthcare cybersecurity, where she has led communications, stakeholder engagement, and strategic initiatives at both the national and organizational level. Her experience includes supporting federal programs, advising industry stakeholders, and building go-to-market strategies in highly regulated environments.

She currently serves as Director of Marketing at a leading healthcare cybersecurity and risk management firm, where her work focuses on enterprise risk, regulatory alignment, and executive-level communications. That experience informs her approach at Axiom, particularly in positioning valuation work within broader financial, legal, and risk-based decision making.

Lisa’s work is defined by clarity, discipline, and a focus on practical outcomes, ensuring that Axiom’s services are not only technically sound, but understood and actionable by the clients they support.
